These are copies of the lists were recorded by Lt. Colonel Winslow and his soldiers while the Acadian men and boys were held prisoners in the church of St-Charles-des-Mines, Grand-Pré in 1755. The Deportation had already begun with Acadians being deported from the Chignecto region at Beaubassin.

These lists contain the names of the Men and Boys who been summoned to the Church, had heard the Deportation Order read to them and who were held prisoners in the Church for one month until the ships arrived to deport them. While imprisoned, British soldiers made a list of their names, if they were married or single, how many sons and daughters they had, how many animals. These lists were framed and hung on a wall behind the interior of the Memorial Church which would have been the sacristy of the Church. Today, an exhibit is in that place and the names may be viewed in a ledger to the right of the entrance to this room. When I first so the framed lists I was very overwhelmed to see all of those names and keep this photo I took that day as a remembrance to all Acadians who suffered from the Deportation.

There are two ways of viewing the list of Acadians deported from Grand-Pré. The list as you it is framed at the Memorial Church of Grand-Pré can be viewed by clicking on the link below. This list is provided as it was originally written. It is from the Collection of the Nova Scotia Historical Society 1879-1884 ~ Journal of John Winslow ~ Volume 1-41 or you may check the following list that is in alphabetical order.2

Upon entering St-Charles-des-Mines Memorial Church in Grand-Pré, the statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, patroness of the Acadians, is flanked by plaques on either side with names of those families who were living in Acadia in 1755. The center plaque below the statue tells the story of what happened here. Behind this wall is the sacristy mentioned above. Here hang copies of the handwritten lists of men and boys in the Church that fateful day in September of 1755.

INDIVIDUAL NAMES OF MEN AND BOYS DEPORTED FROM GRAND-PRÉ IN 1755

As Ordered Written By Colonel Winslow

The names of the Acadians imprisoned in the Church were written by Colonel Winslow and/or his soldiers. This is the list of names contained in the photographed framed lists at the top of this page. The British did not speak French so the names were written by sound. The spellings were usually incorrect. For the most part, this list does allow us to know the names of those imprisoned in the church of St. Charles.
